Take a best selling book that has moved over 23.m copies and built a global fan base, an Oscar nominated actress in Jennifer Lawrence, an accomplished director at the helm in the shape of Gary Ross, throw them altogether and you have the ingredients for a potential blockbuster that will spread past its target young adult audience and appeal to the older audiences in the way that Twilight and Harry Potter did. We are currently being bombarded with TV adverts and clips from the hugely anticipated The Hunger Games, the film that brings all the above together. This sci-fi/thriller is also one of those rare films that is actually unique. Fair enough, it has come from a book, but it isn’t a remake, a sequel or a prequel which, lets face it, most films seem to be these days. Released on 23rd March, we haven’t long to wait to see if it lives up to its hype. There are still those who moan and complain that films that are adapted from books show a lack of originality from filmmakers, but it takes a very special screenwriter who is able to lift the written word and turn it into a visual feast that evokes the senses and the imagination and lets us see what we had only seen in our minds eye, as we play out what we are reading. Some of the best films of the past 100 years have started life as literature; To Kill a Mockinbird, The Godfather and the Lord of The Rings trilogy are such examples. While nobody will claim that the Suzanne Collins novel is a masterpiece of literature like those mentioned above, neither are Twilight or the Harry Potter books, but they translated to film so well that nobody really cared. For those who don’t know the story; North America has disappeared as we know it and is now a brutal country known as Panem, which consists of the all powerful Capitol, and a further 12 districts. The big event in this cruel and tyrannical rule is the annual televised spectacle known as The Hunger Games. We learn that this is part punishment for the uprising that led to the destruction of District 13, and the government’s main tactic of intimidation. On the same date every year, two random names are chosen to represent each district in that years Games, this one is the 74th. The chosen ones are called tributes, they are aged 11-17, and there is a boy and girl randomly picked. A young girl called Primrose is chosen to represent District 12, but her older sister Katniss volunteers to take her place. The other tribute is Peeta, a boy Katniss knew at school who has shown her past kindness in Hunger Games Premiere. After their training under a mentor, each of which are past winners, the 24 are unleashed into an outdoor arena where the goal is simple; kill or be killed and be the last one standing. This cruel game is played out in real time to the viewer and is certainly a good subject for a film. With the pre-bookings steadily climbing, it looks as is The Hunger Games Premiere is going to be one of those films that lives up to its hype and actually delivers what it promises; a great screen adaptation of a hugely popular book.
